How WAS that cover made?

Okay, the book is coming out next Monday, August 2, from Liquid Silver. But you already know that. What you might not know -- and what I certainly didn't know, because my ignorance about many things cannot be plumbed -- is how this incredible cover was made. (And it was painted . . . with tricks!)

Christine Griffin, the artist, was kind enough to post at LSB's "Coming Soon" forum and explain:

"My background is in traditional media, but when my kids came along, I had to put the paints away. Digital is SO much neater! (I'm trying to get back into oils now that the rugrats are older, though.)

"Fugly was actually painted with Corel's Painter program; it mimics traditional media wonderfully, but is a little hard to control. PS is da bomb! I'm still using PS7, and I've no complaints. Someday I may graduate into one of the CS models...when I HAVE to!"

(By PS, I assume she means Photoshop. See? I'm learning!)

That is impressive. I can't paint well in any form.

Love the cover and I'm looking forward to reading the story.

Okay, I'm stunned. That's amazing. I would never have guessed, I just assumed manipulated in some way. Technology is an amazing thing these days. Looking forward to the new release.

This is good to know! I like the cover. It's kind of disturbing, but in a good way. I like the fonts a lot, too!

I'm the same, Lily. That's why artistic talent blows me away.

As Christine said, Tam, she has a "background in traditional media" (obviously, oils), which means she was a real painter to begin with -- and it shows! I'll bet that woman has won awards for her work.

P.S. The hamster shifter story had me tittering like a lunatic. Yet it managed to be sweet, too. You go, girl!

Hey, Val! I imagine you've been nose-deep in writing, edits, and promo lately. Welcome to author purgatory. ;-)

I'm so, so honored to have a truly original work of art for a cover. Chris won't be able to find this guy on any other books. :-D

Cool bit of info! I can't imagine digital painting. I can't even do stick figures.

Hi, and welcome! Thank you for the kind words.

I peeked at your profile and saw that you mention Cry to Heaven as one of your favorite books. I adore it too. In fact, I think it's Anne Rice's finest work.

That's a gorgeous cover, KZ. Not only that, it makes me want to buy the book.

Nice to see you here, Rick!

It's become more and more apparent to me over the years just how much cover art influences readers' book-buying decisions. I first noticed that, and continue to notice it, with one of my old Ellora's Cave novellas. Striking cover + intriguing title = better sales.

In the case of Fugly, I've truly been blessed.

Hi, Nikola! Honestly, it's one of the most impressive ebook covers I've ever seen -- truly a work of art.
